Virtual video job interviews have become the norm, especially as employers and human resource professionals seek to cut down time on the hiring process. And while the majority of organizations have adopted video conference tools in their workflow, virtual interviews may still be new territory for some. This video interview checklist is to equip you for your virtual interview, letting you in on all the hacks that make for a successful virtual interview.
Internet Connection:
Firstly, a stable and high-speed internet connection is vital. Consider using a wired connection for better reliability. There is nothing worse than having to switch (in the middle of your interview) to the hot spot on your phone because your internet has failed.
Get Familiar With The Software the Company Is Using:
Find out what video conferencing platform the hiring manager will use. Usually, when the hiring manager schedules the meeting, the platform (Zoom, Ring Central, Microsoft Teams, etc) is in the calendar invite. However, if it is not, ask the hiring manager directly. The earlier you know, the earlier you can begin practicing and familiarizing yourself with the basic features and settings of the platform. You will need to know how to mute/unmute yourself, to turn on your camera and to add/change background features. Some softwares require a download of the app to access some key features. Don’t wait to figure things out the day of the interview. And make sure to have your camera on!
Lighting and Background:
First impressions, (especially virtual impressions), are paramount to impressing your hiring manager. Likability increases expontentially when a candidate looks good. Position yourself in a well-lit area, ideally facing natural light. Ensure your face is well-lit, avoiding shadows. And if possible, position yourself in front of a window (with your face facing the light) to allow the natural light to brighten your space. And if there is no suitable, well lit place in your house, purchase an external light. But, under no circumstances, should you take the call in your car. The camera angle will be poor as well as the video and sound quality.
And make sure your background is clutter-free. The person on the other end should not see laundry on your bed or toys scattered across the floor. Whether you are taking the call in your office, kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom, make sure your background is clutter free.
Notifications:
Turn off unnecessary notifications on your computer and phone to avoid distractions.
Login Early:
Log in to the virtual interview platform a few minutes early to avoid any last-minute technical glitches. This also shows your commitment and professionalism.
Eye Contact:
Most amateur virtual interviewers make the mistake of looking at the screen when speaking. Most do not understand that looking directly at the screen, makes your gaze appear lower than eye-contact level. It’s best to look into the camera when speaking to simulate eye contact.
Good luck with your video interview. We hope this checklist will help you feel confident and well prepared to impress the hiring manager and show that you are the best candidate for the role. By following these guidelines, you will not only overcome digital challenges but, also present yourself as a tech-savvy and well-prepared candidate.
